Hello
I am currently an undergraduate, in my third year, and I am really interested in taking next semester off and going to Mexico to teach English, and obliquely, to learn Spanish. I may have a friend to stay with in Guadalajara, and that is where I think I'd like to go anyway, so I have a few questions:
1. Can anyone recommend a method of getting certified (or for that matter, is certification necessary)? I have checked out a couple schools in Guadalajara, but I don't know if that is the best approach.
2. Does anyone know what the likelihood is of getting a job in Guadalajara is? All that I want is to make enough money to pay rent and eat food, so I'm not worried about getting a fantastic position.
3. What does one do if employment cannot be found? That worries me a little...
4. Can anyone make any other suggestions? I really have no idea how this works, and I hope to learn a lot more about the whole thing before I go. Other locations that are good for teaching and/or living. Things to watch out for.
Thank you so much for your help!!! |

There is a lot of teaching work in Guadalajara, but with no teaching certificate and no experience it would probably be tough to nail something down.
The ITTO school here offers certification and that will get you work at many places. It's a month long course and its kind of pricey. Just do a search on ITTO.
Send me a private message if you need any other information about the city. |

If you take ITTO, they will help you find a job in a location of your choosing (within reason of course). They have lots of contacts in Guadalajara and can also give you lots of information about the local area, Spanish schools, visas, etc. They don't guarantee good positions, but you should be able to find something. |
