What's up with the Japanese retail industry obsession with point cards? There's no escaping it.
I'm considering getting a couple T-shirts made up, desiganted as my special shopping t-shirts, with the following printed on the front: POINTO CAADO WA MOTTEIMASEN!!! |

There is no disadvantage to point cards. You get a discount for your next purchase. Go ahead and make your t-shirt. |

Ya right, you gotta purchase a billion yen worth of goods to be eligible for a free pack of gum. You go right on ahead with your point cards... |

Wrong. 10% off future purchases at Yodobashi Camera for example. The list goes on. Wrong, as usual. |

As usual, no post, even one of highly satirical nature, can pass Daves without canuck adding his badass know-it-all reply. Nice work canuck. |

Yeah, I agree... The Yodobashi point card is great. Depending on the item, you can get between 10 and 20% of the value in points for future purchases. If you buy a few things, it quickly adds up.
I also have point cards for a few restaurants I go to... Admittedly that discount isn't that great but I eat there a lot so why not take something that's free.
If they ask you for a point card and you're not into, just say you don't have one. It's that easy! |

Here's the thing... I've been going to the same neighbnourhood grocery store for months, 3-5 times per week, and seeing the same 1 or 2 cashiers. Each time they ask the same annoying question. Each time, I give the same reply. Hello? Is there an echo in here?????
Otherwise, take my beef as a bit of "bad hair day" venting. Is that allowed here? Or does every single post have to be sent to the Dave's kangaroo court, wherein canuck is the self-appointed judge, jury and executioner?
Ok, as you were.... |

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, but you see...it's annoying for you BECAUSE it's always the same cashiers at the same supermarket. But if you use the same place alll the time its even more useful to have a point card.
Just trying to help! |

Perhaps you missed the between-the-lines editorial within my original post: I don't give a flying frog about the prospect of earning 00.003 Yen on every cucumber or beer I buy at my local supermarket. Period. Is there an echo in here?????
But I do at least appreciate your attempt to assist. For that, I dub you gentleman and almost-scholar. |

canuck's right.
point cards are good.
Points are usually (depending on the store) redeemable for equal value in yen.
I bought a Vaio notebook at Bic Camera a couple of years ago. Dropped 25 man on it. 10% of 250000 is 25000.
25000 Bic Camera points is/was two new 140 GB external hard drives.
Next time, after buying white goods, I scored a free ipod.
My cinema point card gives me a free movie every 6th time.
My Sugiyama drug store card allows me to cash in my points when they reach 500en intervals for tickets equal to ... 500 yen coupons.
Then there are special days where you get more points if you pay in cash, or if the dragons win a majpr game, or when there is a festival, you can get up to 25% (I've even seen 32% under limited conditions at Bic Camera.)
