Sorry All you probably have this question over and over again..
I have no degree I am going to do a TEFL course, a on line one which is 60 hours and the 20 hours class room training so 80 hours in total. Is this going to be enough to be able to look for work in Istanbul. I have done some english teaching to young (under 10) children in Italy for 8 months so I have a little teaching expereince. Am I going to have trouble finding work with only a TEFL cert and little expereince. i.e. Is there alot of people looking for english teaching work?
Also am I better to arrive and look for work rather than call / email schools from here in New Zealand.
Please help thank you

| with no degree you are going to have a hard time finding a job. The TEFL cert courses should not accept people with no degrees and most schools will not hire them. You will be relegated to the smaller language schools and you are unlikely to get on at a kids' school. Sorry, but that's how it is. |

| With no degree you will get a job easily but it will be an hourly paid job with no holidays, no work permit and you will be at the mercy of the school owner. You will have to come here and go round the schools knocking on doors. |

My advice is to go and get a degree.
Feel free to throw a wobbly and call me a horrid old man full of bourgeois ideas. |

I know that English Time has employed people who don't have degrees before. |

| Just jazz your CV up by putting down a degree from the University of WongWonga or wherever. Hey presto you have a job. Use Pagemaker or one of its ilk and adward yourself your degree. When you arrive bring your degree and TEFL cert and nobody will care. Add a quote in Latin and a royal looking crest and you are a winner. |

You have gone right up in my estimation.
Don't feel bad about it because you will learn the hard way that TEFL is a rat eat rat dog eat dog game. Honesty is most definitely not the best policy. |

Hello Kyz.
A degree is not usually required if you plan on teaching in Turkey.
If you require any further info on teaching in Turkey then the Turkey section of this forum has some excellent posts.
You can also feel free to email me and I will provide you with objective feedback (we have had a number of grads who have headed down to Turkey).
All the best! |
