Hi,

Like a lot of people, I am having trouble trying to decide which TEFL course to go on.

Does anyone know anything about the 4 week TESOL course offered by The World TEFL school (www.worldteflschool.com)? They offer courses on Phuket & Samui (both at different prices which I find strange). They claim to be recognised by the Thai Ministry of Education.

Has anyone out there been on a course offered by them, and successfully gained employment in Thailand?

If anyone has any information, it will be much appreciated.

Please help!!!

^ Hi

I spent 30 minutes on their webpage.

http://www.worldteflschool.com/

Very clever marketing; here's the deal:

If you read the fine print, you'll see that they are actually

recruiters --- rather than having a school of their own.

In the paragraphs containing school details

they continually refer to partner schools -

that's why the prices are different.

Their Bangkok & Chiang Mai courses, for example

are held at International House, and that's a CELTA.

The Koh Samui course is held at Island TEFL

(not a CELTA) but a 120 hour TESOL certificate.

Why not inquire at the schools directly?

That's what I'd do if I were you.

On the Master Index Thailand, scroll way down to Appendix B

& have a look at FAQ 11. All the schools mentioned above

are on that list, so you can compare apples with apples.

Thanks so much for your reply!

I have got so wrapped up & confused with the whole TEFL thing that I just can't see straight anymore!

I have already paid a deposit with the World TEFL School for the Samui 4 week TESOL (as you say will be with Island TEFL).

However after researching the matter in greater depth (and kicking myself very hard for jumping in feet first without doing my homework), I think I have decided to forfeit my money, and go with TEFL International instead.

Would you have any comments on this decision?

As I say - many thanks for your time.

Don't kick yourself too hard; it can be confusing with so many options.

I don't usually make specific recommendations on TESOL courses;

Just be sure that the course you enroll in is at least 120 hours

& contains 6 or more hours of observed teaching practice.

TEFL International, SIT TESOL at AUA, Text-and-Talk,

International House, ECC & Elite (CELTA) all meet

or exceed those fundamental requirements.

Then it comes down to location,

price, timing & reputation, etc.

CELTA generally wins the worldwide recognition award,

but may not be so practical for teachers in the real world

who often have to manage large classes of 50 or 60 students,

and so the debate goes on and on - as to which one is the best.

That's why I shy away from making specific recommendations.

One more little tip before I hit the sack tonight;

Read tedkarma's advice; he's a regular on this forum

and longtime TEFL vet who also works as a TEFL trainer:
