No plans to TEFL there right now but in the process of planning a holiday and just wondered for curiousity sake what the TEFL scene is like there? It's a place which rarely seems to crop up in TEFL ads and few teachers that I've spoken to seem to know anyone who's worked there so what is the deal?

Well from what I know about Iceland, it has an extremely high standard education system (like the Scandinavian countries) - it was actually #1 on the UN's HDI in 2003 I think, and since it is an Island with only about 300 000 people in it, it makes sense for their system to be focused on also learning a second language (though I know that is not the case everywhere). I have an Icelandic couple in one of my classes and they speak English almost as well as any native speaker.

I studied Icelandic and lived in Iceland. No one tefls in Iceland because they get tons of English there much like the rest of Scandinavia; notice the absence of these countries on the board. It is also ridiculously expensive. I don't drink but be prepares to spend 10 euros on a beer. Having said that Iceland is a cool place and the language is cool; learn it and you can read 800 year old Norse sagas in the original...

Island er fallith land....

I don't mean to hijack the threat but if you have any interesting facts/experiences to share about Iceland, I for one would be very curious to hear them.

Go for a book called The Killers Guide To Iceland. A good comedy thriller. Loads of Icelandic facts!!!
