For most of my "first day" classes, I like to provide students with some background to my home country, Canada, which moves beyond the most important aspects (Leonard Cohen, Rush and potable water) to include a "language composite" of the land. Many students seem unaware that Canada is more than a majority of English with a large minority of French.
Should any of you other Canucks take a similar approach in any "intro" classes, the following map could be of some use to you. And if you are in a classroom with modern technology at hand, projecting the following linguistic map of Canada could be an awfully handy piece of "First Day of Class" material.

| You're way too serious Shan-Shan. The easiest way to put me to sleep in a language class would be to put up a map of China and discuss all of the different dialects. Actually, it would do more harm than good. You've been hired as a clown, now go do something funny! |
