I have been offered an ESL job at a university (I think) here. Has anyone out there had experience of this place? I'd appreciate some feedback as I have never worked in China. The pay is 5,500RMB a month for 16 hours work a week, free accommodation (apartment) and a few other inducements thrown in. My colleagues tell me the salary is too low but from my research it seems this is around average for China.
From its Website the area looks OK but I have been told it's pretty grim.
Any comments? |

Your colleagues told you the salary is too low? are they working in ESL? If not, how would they know this? actually 5500 is fairly good for the university jobs here, the hours of work are low and the jobs usually stress free.
Zhanjiang seems to be a decent enough place, I passed through there a couple of times so I had a chance to look around. Lots of seafood obviously and the climate is nice enough on the coast.
Whats the name of the school? Guangdong Ocean University? Seems to be a currently ongoing thread on this forum about that school. Have a look around, you should uncover it. |

I too have only been there in transit, and I guess few people will feel attracted to that town as it lies almost smack in the middle between Guangzhou (ca. 500 klicks to the east) and theVietnamese border (another 300 kms) or Haikou on Hainan, some 80 kms away.
The town is slowly developing and may have a modicum of charm but you will find plenty of Zhangjiangese down in the Pearl River Delta.
5500 is a good salary; ignore your expat colleagues' opinions. |

You should NEVER! EVER! work for less than 8000RMB if working for a (genuine) University! |

Thanks everyone who replied. I appreciate your comments.
Yes the position is ESL teaching and given the benefits included (free appartment etc) I think the salary is OK. I am suspicious of high salaries as I believe they include extra and unspecified obligations. I am more concerned with the reliability of the employer and the stability of the position.
My contact is with a guy called Fred from Channel Recruitment. Anyone heard of him? I understand the position is with a university.
I have been working in Vietnam for almost 3 years and have come to the end of my personal and professional time here. China is a challenge (I think) and I'm anxious about moving out of my comfort zone.
Any further comments would be appreciated.
Anyone had any dealings with Fred? |

I believe I had this job four years ago. There are only three universities in this hot-smog hole of a town...This sound like a recruiter for the medical College.
I liked the FAO, and the students, but Zhanjiang is like many cities here, NOTHING special. Tenement style housing everywhere, many noisy motorcycles till 2am, ETC...
I agree 5500 is becoming to low these days... Many of the Chinese teachers at this school are making more than this.
