|
|
Well, I am back and been working real hard. Lots of overtime as a Child Abuse Investigator and I will be ready for that vacation come early to mid 2007. I will have 4 weeks on the books and some change and would like to know if there is a Tefl certificate program in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Philippines or Veitnam I can participate in.
While it will be my vacation, I do want some free time for R and R but I also would like to get the certificate under my belt.
Any ideas?
Thanks, all advice will be appreciated. |

Found some good sites on the Internet that meet my criteria.
But I am still open to any advice. |

Look into the Celta, but you will have little time for R & R. Tefl International may also be good, they advertise heavily on this site. I know they are based in Thailand, but have sites everywhere. |

Or go the opposite route and just buy (a fake) one on Khao San Road, and then head off to the beach. Then you get tonnes of time for the R and R, but zero in the way of learning.
Don't you think squeezing your career training into and around your vacation is a little... uh...unseemly? |

I don't think so, but it doesn't sound very good about our career then does it, the fact you can do it in a month. Sounds like a good use of your time to me. However, if the tefl cert is anything like the Celta, there will be no R & R at all. |

Unseemingly? Actually, I have over 5 years experience working as a tutor and writing specialist for ESL and EOP students at a University. That was one of my several jobs while putting myself through school....so I do have experience. I have also taught anger management and substance abuse classes at the college level, so I have at least a rudimentary understanding of class room dynamics.
My present profession as a child abuse investigator is very rewarding and it pays well enough were I can save at least 2k USD per month, if I watch my spending. But...
(1) I have lived overseas and that is where I have felt the "home" the most and I need to get back there in the future.
(2) I have a month vacation coming and Oh GOD, I am craving to get back to Asia! But, I have never been much of a tourist and I kinda wanted to see if I could kill to birds with one stone. On the other hand I could easily contact a local gov or school and do some volunteer teaching/counseling etc and still feel productive while getting my R and R.
(3) I take ESL very seriously and I apoligize if I made it sound like getting a certifcate is just a joke. [SIDEBAR] Do those fake certs really work?
(4) Because I do take education seriously, I plan on getting the neccessary skills and degree with a second Masters before I expat.
Thanks for your reply...
Hey Gordon, how is that Distance degree serving you sir?Have you had any problems with people accepting it?
Also, does your degree state that it was done by distance or do the degree look the same as one that is done on campus? |

Well, I haven't had to put it to use from a application point of view, as I am still working at the same job as before. However, I have absolutely no doubt about it's acceptance. 95% of employers accept them as equal to on-campus degrees, as they should. I found the people most against distance degrees are not employers, but rather teachers who studied on campus and have a bit of a superiority complex about the whole thing.
No mention of distance anywhere on the degree, looks the same as their other degrees, and I also was awarded an Academic achievement certificate from the Dean as a bit of a bonus, as it was unexpected. |

McC,
Even the easiest of programs will have you working pretty hard during those four weeks. There won't be much time for hanging on the beach. But- you can probably scratch out ONE day on the weekend for relaxation. That will be about the best one can do though.
You my try "How to Select a TEFL School" for some criteria for figuring out which school(s) might be best for you:
