I heard a track by a band called the Walkmen last nite, and it reminded me of Cambodian music. I like Cambodian music but for the fact that it starts at 5:30 in the morning, full blast.

When does the music start to play where you live-- and do you like it?

Where I work we get the first call to prayer before sunup. You get used to it though.
People can get used to lots of things - even working in Cambodia.

What is really "fun", is when they hustle everybody out of the Safeway's,etc. because it is time for prayer call.Still,if you like Saudi, different strokes for different folks.... Rolling Eyes
The title of this thread is deceptive.I thought it was going to be about the yodelers, edelweiss,"doe a deer" and all of that stuff. Laughing

In the evenings in China, you can see music that is either traditional or a blatant attempt at patriotism on TV. I actually don't mind traditional Chinese insturmental music (although I'm more partial to Japan's koto and shyakuhachi.) Sometimes they play the glaringly Orwellian patriotic stuff on the one channel that's supposed to be reserved for English programming. They do include English subtitles, and I'm telling you: Orwell's estate ought to be getting royalties from these guys. What is a characature for me is mainstream here.

I'm lucky in that my school's speaker system is nowhere near where I live, so I don't hear it unless I go outside. However, Patriotic Parade often begins at 7:00 am or so in many other schools. The only thing is our (totally awful) brass band practices on the roof of the building next to mine, and during the SARS enforced lockdown they practiced in the moring at 8:00am.

No music here, since I live out in the rice paddies of Japan, but I do get all sorts of "sounds of nature," starting at about 4:30am--pheasants, sparrows, cicada, etc. So much nature! Too much for a little city girl like me!

Oh, and then there's the guy who, every morning, treks up to the top of the hill that I live on and yells. Usually at about 7am.

Not a great deal of music here either... on my way to work I'm usually cerenaded by either the obligatory drilling of any and every street in London, or the culturally challenged locals turning their cars into mobile nightclubs... maybe as an effort to get noticed, as walking to work and hearing an actual English accent is an amusing rarity.
