I recently spoke to a school representative in Shanghai who told me that because I am Asian I will have a very difficult time finding an ESL job in mainland China. Does anybody know if this is true? If you have any advice or if you were a Chinese-American teacher in China, I'd really like to hear about your experience!

Yes it's true and this topic has been discussed too many times.
Advice: apply to as many employers and instead of just applying for jobs in Shanghai, try smaller cities and rural regions.
In my school there are four FT's here who are 100% Chinese, plus another one who is half Chinese. That's two Canadians, two Americans, and an Australian. |

I was informed by one college that American Chinese are welcome but they must pass a special exam given by the head of the English department.
If it is a typical Chinese English test which focuses on obscure grammatical points and provides no context in which to analyze the item, I doubt that I could pass it.
Some Chinese despise Americans, perhaps even moreso Chinese Americans. |
