What food should I gorge myself on before I leave? What do you guys really miss? I know there is not a whole lot of good dairy available and I love my cheese. |

Hi, There's lots of queso fresco. Which is cheap and good. In big cities, you can find cheese, it's just expensive. And there's lots of milk available here as well. |

There is soy milk, but... yuck. Not very drinkable.
What I missed was variety. Living in a smallish city, I didn't have access to the different types of ethnic foods that I so often craved. Peruvian food (even the veggie stuff!) is good, but there where days when I just craved a burrito or falafel.

Good cheese outside Lima is as rare as an honest politician anywhere in the world! Maybe I was just spolit in the UK with the variety of local cheeses we have there (more than France!!) but I have yet to find any good cheese here. Milk is available but it is always full fat. Unless you go for that Long Life stuff. Yuck.
It's definitely variety I miss. I have family coming in December and they are bringing a spare bag full of spices and packet sauces just to ring the changes a bit. If you have fave herbs and spices to cook with, bring a truck load. You can get the basics here - corriander, saffron, oregano but anything allegedly spicey is always a disappointment. Apart from Aji which is a godsend for a curry-starved Brit. |
