i had my certificates stolen and am in the middle of replacing them. will i be able to get the work visa process started in japan with original transcripts and but only photocopies of my certificates? the process of replacing certs may take up to a month.

Were the photocopies certified by anyone in some way? A notary public? The embassy? Of course, that type of photocopy would be better than one without such certification.

Can you have the issuing authorities fax something to you or immigration in lieu of the originals?

Just how much time do you need to get your visa renewed? If it's beyond a month, ask for an extension of your current visa first.

You should not have to leave Japan to do the visa application or renewal.

the photocopies were not certified, no. but the transcripts are original.

it won't be more than a month and it will likely be a bit less and yes the university can fax them something in the meantime so i am probably worrying about nothing.

so i could get an extension on the tourist visa to cover the overlap? handy.

so the days of ferrying it to korea are well and truly over then? that sounds just dandy.

does the employer foot the entire cost of the visa?
