Is my membership valid in Japan? Can I refill my contact lens prescription or would I need a new exam? Just wondering what to take with me in my luggage.

Pretty sure your costco membership is valid in Japan, and anywhere else for that matter. I joined in Japan and have also been able to use costco in Korea. I'm not American, but I have a couple of American friends who used their costco card from the US with no problem in Japan.

Not many costcos in Japan, mind. No idea what kind of range of stuff is available in US costco stores, but I've a hunch Americans might find the selection here a bit disappointing. That's just based on my experience of Costco's Fukuoka place - dunno if their other Japan stores are better.

That's fair enough... But in such a situation, when possible (to help avoid forum clutter) resurrecting an old thread will bump it back to the top of the list and is generally preferable to starting a brand new one.

As for your prescription question -- I can say pretty much for certain that they will not honour your lens prescription here... Yes, you would have to get an eye exam, etc... Be aware though, that many optometrists also dispense lenses/glasses and may be unwilling (i.e. against their policy) to give you your prescription written on a paper so you can get it filled elsewhere (e.g. at Costco)... So make sure you ask before you pay the money to get the eye exam done. I don't know whether or not Costco can offer in-house eye exsams or not.

As for me, I have a good relationship with my optometrist in Canada. Whenever I run out of lenses, he ships me new ones to Japan as my prescription is not available in Canada, nor any kind of lens even remotely similar to what I use...
