i know this sounds daft but:

if one is hired from outside Japan to work as an alt, is it really necessary to wait 4-6 weeks before being able to work? i have been informed that it takes this amount of time to get the certificate of eligibility and therefore one cannot be employed until such time as that is completed.

true or false?

A company can hire you but it is not up to the company if you are eligible for a visa, that is up to immigration. It can take between 4-6 weeks, although it may take shorter. That's just the way it is.

You can't earn in Japan until you have your visa. If it takes 4-6 weeks then that is how long you have to wait. Not much you can do about that. It depends on how promptly you get your documents together that determines how long you have to wait but the processing time for the documents is basically out of your hands.

So, yes. That's the situation.

You don't need to get a Certificate of Eligibility to get what is commonly described as a work visa. It can speed the process up however.

It might even take longer to get the COE. Mine took 7 weeks. Depends on timing, which office you go through, how busy they are, phase of the moon, etc. Be patient. After you get here, you will still have to wait 4-6 weeks more before you see your first paycheck, you know.

And, as for not needing the COE, check the MOFA site.
