Hey all, I'm going to do my Masters (distance) next year and am considering the Deaking MTESOL course: http://www.deakin.edu.au/education/masters/courses/mtesol.php
Have any of you studied at Deakin? I'm also considering the UNE MAAL program, and have seen some good recommendations, but I haven't found *any* references (good or bad) about the Deakin program.
Any comments much appreciated! |

I studied at Deakin for 1 year some years back. Deakin is a 'new' uni with a couple of campuses around Geelong, nr Melbourne. I didn't study in the linguistics field, but I thought their teaching in my subject was very simplistic - far more simplistic than my uni course back in the UK. What I was learning in my class was akin to what I studied at middle and high school. I think it's hard for such 'remote' universities to attract high calibre professors. Maybe your subject has better quality academics. Who knows. But the region at least is very pleasant. |

An ex-girlfriend and her sister both did their degrees at Deakin, and now they're both highly regarded in their respective fields and rolling in money, so it didn't do them any harm.
A lot of people get rather snooty on the subject of universities. If you want to impress pompous tw*ts then you should probably fork out some big money for a prestigous uni. Otherwise, a degree is a degree. 90% of any degree is fluff anyway - it's rather like an obstacle course. All you have to do is prove that you can get the work in on time and exhibit a suitably high tolerance for the mind-numbingly dull - which is of course a prerequisite for any form of employment. |

Deakin also has campuses elsewhere, in Warnambool and Burwood (Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne) not that it matters to someone who is taking their degree by distance!
I did my degree with Deakin and found it really good. I only took linguistics for a year but found the course informative and well-structured. Deakin along with other Australian Unis do a fantastic job of distance learning, mostly because they have to. The majority of their students are off-campus, such is the nature of teaching in a country the size of Australia with such a spread-out population. As a general rule their materials and student support are great.

I almost studied with Deakin a few years back. The only thing that held me back was that their tesol program was called MPET. I can't recall what it stands for (masters in professional.....) and I am sure employers wouldn't either. I was afraid it would hinder my chances of employment so I turned them down. |
