Hello all!
I have warm fuzzies making my first post on Dave's. A few years ago I was offered a position at the Ministry's Teachers Colleges, but did not accept due to family circumstances. Now I am eager to begin teaching in the Gulf, and I would not mind Saudiya, although I know it will be an amazing adjustment. Can anyone advise me about working for the college? Below is my brief profile and the offer I received in '03.
30 year old male
Married 2 children (2 and 1)
BA English
7 years teaching in independent schools in the US
Teaching Certificate (English)
And a host of summer jobs and activities that make me look competent (hopefully)
1. A monthly salary of S.R. 6120, plus S.R. 350 for
every year of teaching experience. A maximum of five
years may be weighed in.
2. An annual increment of no more than 5% of the
monthly salary (not exceeding the maximum limit
specified in the payroll) upon renewal of the
contract.
3. A monthly allowance for transportation in the
amount of S.R. 500.
4. An annual allowance for housing in the amount of
S.R. 17000.
5. A one-time allowance for furniture in the amount of
S.R. 8500.
There is some other mumbo jumbo that seems to be standard.
Thanks. |

Welcome aboard Brother.
I don't know anything about this "College" but their offer is very bad. It's insulting. You can do better. With your specs I'd try to get some kind of TEFL qualification first then apply for one of the many OK jobs paying at least 10k + housing and the usual benefits.
Of course you also need to consider your kids' education. Who's going to pay for that? And how long will you have to wait before your family can join you?
Where did you see find this job? Have you looked at other jobs in Saudi? Surely it's not so grim back in the States that you need to consider options like this one? |

Thanks for the welcome and the reply. I have a friend who worked here for two years. I am looking at other places in Saudi, but I didn't know what salary to seek given my specs.
"THANKS DAVE'S!" says UB with a sparkly Kool-Aid grin.
Any other leads would be much appreciated. |

This is the standard contract for a teacher of English in Saudi universities and colleges. According to their pay regulations for a teacher with B.A in English the maximum limit in the payroll is 6880 SR. Now, it depends on how you negotiate with them, because the teachers who come from the West are treated differently from the ones who come, for example, from Egypt or Jordan. So, you have to negotiate your case with them and also you have to compare their contract with your current salary and living expenses in US. They used to add 50% for the basic salary for native speaker if they come from Europe and Us/Canada, but now I am not sure if they still using this rule! |

The Teachers Colleges are not the best place to work. Standards are low.
My advice is to head elsewhere. But not to Slaka.
PM me if you want a suggestion or two.

If they can't be bothered to PM me then they don't need the advice. |
