Hey all, been teaching in China for two years and digging it a lot. I'm starting to get management offers and am interested in biting, but some of these gigs require not only the university degree and experience I have, but a tesl cerification, which I don't have. I'm thinking of doing an online course so I can keep working at the same time and was wondering if anyone out there has done this, and what your experiences/impressions are. Are these courses a waste of time? Do employers discount them because they are over the net? Does it matter? Thanks.

Archer College in Vancouver, Canada, offers an online version of their on-site TEFL certificate course for C$645. I've found it to be comprehensive and practical, with a top-notch teacher. It's course book (Scrivener) is co-published in China, while each of the five modules is available as a PDF email attachment. You can read more about it at http://www.winfieldcollege.com/tefl/tesl_distance.html if you're so inclined.

Since Archer College offers both on-site and online training, I wouldn't think that the fact that you did the course by distance learning should matter all that much--or that a prospective employer would necessarily look at your resulting certificate prejudicially.
