this might've been discussed before...i hope it's not on the first page here somewhere, but i've been wondering how many FTs have to make up for these holidays and how many just get it and get paid for it
chinese get that one day at christmas as well as on new year, but they have to work another day to make up for it
how are your contracts guys???

I had to work Christmas Day. Our school is having 3 days off for New Year (Mon - Wed), but the Tues and Wed get made up this weekend... go figure...   |

Since this year (the current one) FTs at our school have been offered a paid Christmas holiday; in fact they gave us off on two days for Christmas which nicely added to the weekend - hence I am away from grotty Guangzhou.
No,we don't have to make up those classesalthough it's kind of ironic that Monday classes had two holidays during this term - the October holidays and Christmas both fell on a Monday, and only the October class had tobe made up.
My partner has less good luck: no Christmas holiday, and 31st of December, which is on a Sunday, hasbeen scheduled for meetings with her colleagues and principal. She will have to wait until that nonsense is over to take the train to join me... |

Christmas Day we got off, paid, but the Chinese teachers worked. No make-up days required.
And then this funky Chinese government mandated switcheroo for the New Year's holiday (which ALL get to enjoy): Holiday is M-W, 1st - 3rd. But, they are switching the Tuesday and Wednesday for the weekend preceding, so we have to come to work on Saturday and then only a half day on Sunday. Technically, I only have one class for Sunday, but I always have a ton of extra things to do. Somehow in all this mess, I gained an extra half-day off so I can't complain TOO loudly - - - but what lamebrain thinks changing the weekend for weekdays is a GOOD idea? Afterwards, we come back for two whole days and then off another weekend. I feel a post-New Year's cold coming on . . . |

| I got Christmas and all the Chinese are in school. I also got Boxing day!!! I swapped thanksgiving for boxing day becuase I'm an Aussie. YAY 4 days!!!!! (inc sat and sun) |

Maybe if I were getting the weekend AND the 3-day holiday, I can see maybe traveling (thus spending money, thus stimulating the economy), but otherwise it's just a 3-day weekend in the middle of the week. How, exactly, does this day-switching idea stimulate the economy? |

I would doubt that when they want to increase spending they are thinking about foreigners..as Chinese people don't travel much..I would guess that spending is pretty close to home... |

| As I wrote in another thread in the off-topic forum, I don't even remember if my contract says whether I get Christmas Day off or not. I just told the Foreign Language Department that it it did and they gladly allowed me to cancel my one-and-only class. |

Did she actually try to get it off? Even though it may mean rearranging classes I found that Chinese schools were usually flexible in that regard. |

Yes, they are sometimes flexible.
TW, I believe that the standard contract for FTs in China does have something about holidays mentioned. Those holidays are those standard Chinese holidays and Christmas is mentioned....i haven't got that contract handy, but i'd put my five bucks on that one.

Dear A,
Stimulating the economy by working for 7 or 8 days in a row is quite an interesting concept to me. Then, your second reply is quite stimulating.

I see that many of us have worked for more than 5 days prior to our dear holidays. I was quite stimulated at my little Christmas tree. I finished it off with a bottle of Italian white wine. My purchase of that bottle might've stimulated the high flying Chinese economy 
Spring Festival is coming and so are its holidays. I am thinking of yet another marathon run before I stimulate the Chinese economy again.

So, how does your Spring Festival schedule look like? Are you working on the coming Wednesday, or Thursday? When are you to come back to work? Will you be called back to work on the last February weekend and then have to work 7 days continuously?
