Hey,
I am looking into finding work in Guadalajara. I aim to go to Mexico the last week in January.
I have a year's teaching experience in Korea and a degree. Is it possible to get full time hours teaching only in elementary schools/language academies?
I don't want to teach business English.
Also is it realistic to think I can save some cash whilst in Mexico?
I have so far read many mixed reviews and it's hard to know what is true.

Isn't that what you'd expect, really? People's experiences differ from one extreme to the other, and so they have widely different results to report. I've found some countries extremely easy to make a go of, while others have been harder, for one reason or another. For me, Mexico, so far, is proving to be one of the harder places to make money, and save money.
Without going into detail, and hoping to do better in the next few months, I'm currently working for less than I've been paid anytime since I started out- and it's normal, here, according to what I've read on this forum.
Also, based on what I've read on this forum, the difference for you, with your experience being Korea- the lower pay and, at the same time, a possibly higher cost of living here, in Mexico, may take some getting used to, as it has for me. |

You've just missed the January hiring mini-season for high schools and the like but language schools hire all year round.
You may have to teach 'Business English' but since no one here can define it, it usually involves teaching English with a business book - nothing too demanding. Plus, classes in companies are generally paid at a much higher rate than on-site classes.
You can save here if you live frugally, have no dependents and make upwards of $9000 a month (difficult to make in a language school). Though living frugally in Mexico isn't that much fun. |

Indigo, there are many good reasons to relocate to Mexico, but making and saving money are probably not among them. People who want to do that seem to gravitate to the middle east, or- for those preferring Asia- to Korea, if you can rely on these forums as a guide.
If I may ask, why did you decide to leave Korea, aside from the awful weather? |

Well my contract was up and it was 23rd December so wanted to go back home for Xmas. I do want to travel and experience other countries too. Korea was great, the only thing I didn't like was having to finish the text books in such a a short period of time but you get used to the teaching sytem etc.
I think I will probably return to Asia after Mexico. |
