Do you have to exit China every year? I have my work permits good til May 30 2007 but I entered the country in February 2006, do I have to exit for at least 24 hours in February 2007? Thank you for your kind response.

Only if it says so in your visa or your resident's permit.

There are visas issued by some consulates abroad that specify you have to exit once every 30 days and return to the Mainland but those are hardly work visas.

"Do you have to exit China every year?" -- Long Ai Gu

You only need to exit China when your residence permit is expiring, and you don't renew it or change it to a visitor visa. Any other entries or exits are purely at your own discretion. Or, as Bayden said, "No."

There are some special cases where this is true. I'm not sure how far this extends, but at our university, one of the top 10% of China's unis, full professors are paid pretty well even by US or Canadian standards. Our FA office tells us we must return to our country of origin once a year or we'll have to pay one wheelbarrow full of tax money. Once we make the trip, we have to present a copy of the exit and entry stamps in our passport: two for both ends.

This could be b.s., but I've never paid any taxes and don't want to start now.

Thanks for the info folks, I was under the impression that I had to exit once a year. 3 out of the 4 e-mails stated I don't have to and one was unsure so I guess y'all saved me a trip to Hong Kong, thanx again I love you all--really... Very Happy
