Hello everyone,

My brother just turned 19 and he is thinking about popping over to Japan during his winter vacation to have some fun. He gave me a call telling me about all of the boozing, tail chasing and hell raising he was planning on doing. I congratulated, him, but then mentioned that he might still be under age in Japan.

I checked it out and discovered that Japan's official minimum drinking age is 20.

So here's my question . . .

Is the minimum drinking age enforced as rigidly in Japan as it is in the US or will he still be able to go out to bars and clubs, buy his own alcohol and enjoy the nightlife properly?

No. There are no police monitoring the beer vending machines either.

So they never check ids at bars and clubs? Sounds like Europe.

I've seen students in school uniforms buying cigarettes and alcohol at the convenience store.

No, Japan is not as strict with alcohol policies as the US.

He should be fine going into izakayas or restaraunts and ordering alcohol.

As for clubs, I believe some of them are strict, especially against foreigners. Some of the clubs in Roppongi ask for ID with the minimum age being 23 at times, and won't even let you in if you're a foreigner.

As for Nagoya, ID night club asks almost EVERY foreigner who looks remotely under 30 for some identification. The two beefy Japillians (1/2 Japanese, 1/2 Brazillian) look down on you like a cockroach from a Tokyo subway.

The police probably don't clamp down very hard on this sort of thing because it's not much of a problem. If you were to put vending machines selling beer on every street corner of the UK there would be huge abuse of alcohol by under-aged drinkers (and when I say huge I mean even more so than there is at the moment).

I've been drinking alcohol since I was about three years old. My parents gave it to me. I don't think Japanese parents do this. In fact at the age of ten I could have drunk most Japanese parents under the table.

Sweetsee: It's a little tedious, don't you think? Nowhere is it written that you MUST provide a link to Tokyo AA in every single thread that alcohol or drinking is so much mentioned. Not everyone who goes out drinking is an alcoholic you know. Sheesh!

Yes, I agree. Sweetsee, stop confronting us with your failures. We haven't forgotten them.

Last time I checked Jim, and you too Ali, it was a free world. And as long as people are so quick to judge, condemn, patronize, take the piss and generally be arrogant, I will continue to post whatever I feel like.
So, raise your glasses to that.
Hmmph...tedious...not in the least. What I find tedious is people who make comments regarding things they know nothing about. My reputation here has come as a result of exactly that, people more concerned with hassling me than sticking to the thread content.
My apologies to the OP for distracting from this thread.
Enjoy,
s

Jesus!

The point is that as soon as someone mentions alcohol you rush to "save our souls" or something.

I think your posts speak for themselves. No need to point out irregularities to anyone.
