Lonely Planet has always been my first choice elsewhere in the world, but for Peru I really like the Footprints guide.
Don't really rate the rough guides, never found them that accurate. |

Before coming to Peru, I hit the local libraries and tried to read all I could find. LP, Rough Guide, Lets Go, Moon, etc... were all relatively similar. As keepwalking metions I was impressed with the Footprints Guide. I think the guys name is something like Ben Box and he brought some interesting angles to Peru. If you have the chance check out Footprints South America guide, which is also very interesting. But, like many, when it came time to purchase, I opted for LP. Of course the first three budget hotels I tried in Trujillo no longer exist, but most everything else is fairly on point and accurate. |

I agree with the previous two posters. I have always been a Lonely PLanet girl, but have found the South American Footprints good.
Ofcourse it is important not to be a slave to your guidebook and to look at other sources for information as well.
Where you heading? |

I used to really like Lonely Planet until I went to several countries and found they didn't update their books. I had gone to several hotel only to find they were closed down. It was very frustrating . So I stopped using Lonely Planet. I like Frommer's and Rough Guide. |

Isn't the Rough Guide the one that doesn't list actual prices? Frommers always seemed to be the sort of tourist guide that my parents would use.
I'll have to see if I can find a Peru Footprints and give it a once over. |
