I am slighty surprised about the lack of coverage of his death in the foreign press(well bbc world)

He was basically responsible for the Cyprus ahem invasion in 1974.
He publically blamed Gladio(secret 'stay behind' NATO army) for the Taksim square massacre in the late 70s and got alot of heat about it.

In the 80s after the military coup he was banned from politics for almost a decade. He still came back to be PM.

He also translated Sanskrit, Bengali and English literature into Turkish.

He published about a dozen books on politics.

A talented man?

Was he mentioned in the orbituries in the UK?

Actually in order to put off work, I'll start googling and try to answer my own question.

His death was on the front page of BBC.co.uk news the other day.

I liked him. A lot of the same ideals as Ataturk in a way. Turkey needs another like him now to stop the tide turning away from secularism.

Speaking of the Cyprus issue. The EU issued a dealine yesterday to Turkey. It's got until the middle of next month to open ports to Cyprus traffic or 'face unspecified consequences' (as the commission puts it).

Oh er.... Rolling Eyes

Erdogan has been on the turkish news channels all morning saying he won't. Maybe if the EU insist that all gumruk officers have to wear a headscarf he'll agree.

And he got a sizeable mention on Radio 4's "Last Word" prog. this evening.

(I DO love having access to BBC Radio on broadband!)

Turkey, as one of the guarantors of Cyprus (Britain and Greece were the other two), had a legal right at anytime to intervene (a better word than invade) if any trouble started.

Also notice how the majority of killed/missing Greeks were communist?
This has been coverd in Greek film (shown in the UK a couple of times) which claims that the junta blamed all these deaths on the Turks when they themselves were responsible.
An excellent book on the subject is The Cyprus Conspiracy: America, Espionage and the Turkish Invasion by Brendan O'Malley & Ian Craig.
I B Tauris & Co Ltd.
ISBN: 1860647375.
Going cheap on Amazon.
