Chinese semester is nearly over and I have 2 and a half months to burn this year !!
I'm thinking of coming to Italy in January and February to spend two months in Treviso area with my GF. She reckons she knows somewhere I can rent for a few months at 250 Euro a month.I'm trying to scrape the pennies together so I can just chill out but I think that if I can get some work on the side it would be really useful cash. I don't want contracts - just cash in hand. I have a CELTA and am currently studying for my DELTA if that makes any difference . DELTA won't be finished until next summer. I've been teaching Chinese for 2 and a half years and have experience teaching Europeans, Kindergartens and summer schools.

What's the crack with this type of work considering I have no 'Italy ' experience. Is it possible for me to get some work on the side?

Ta Cool [/u]

You're talking about two months? I think you'd spend at least two weeks getting settled in and looking for work, which would leave six weeks of actual working time. VERY FEW schools will pay cash-in-hand. None of the big-name chain schools would risk it, so check out local operations. I'd say that about 10% of teaching positions are c-i-h. Remember, every UKer with a TESL certificate wants to teach (legally) in Italy. From that 10% you would have to find a school that was willing to employ you for six weeks. Fat chance. You have two options here: ask if any teachers didn't come back after Christmas (unlikely) in case the school needs short-term coverage while they hire a permanent teacher, or tell them you'll work until July and then turn around and quit in February. That'll be one position you can't put on your resume. I imagine that finding a short-term, ILLEGAL position would be difficult in any country.

As a legal UK passport holder I can concur with that, although my perspective is from the point of view of someone who only does privates. It takes time to build up contacts, get advertising around, have a few students who then pass your name on. Either way it would be best to treat it as a holiday and then you might get a few private hours on the side. Best start saving and doing a few privates in China!

You're obviously not a skier/boarder! Head an hour or so North to the Dolomites for a bit of snow action at that time of year and spend even more money! Go on - privates - you know it makes sense.

Not a boarder but my student wants to take me to some mountains in Haerbin to do some boardin. I reckon should be a crack and is pretty cheap compared to what you guys in Europe probably pay.

I got a mail today from a school that need a teacher and hope that they'll consider me. I 've told them the truth . I can't be bothered to sign up a contract and then do a runner. Does not seem right to me and I hate stress !! If I can't get work I can always sleep more Smile
