Hi,

I am currently a registered teacher here in Queensland, Australia. I have been thinking about going and teaching as a NET in HK. I was just wondering about qualifications. I have a Masters in Applied Linguistics, a Grad Dip Further Education and Training (FET) and a BA /modern Asian Studies. Here in Australia, the Grad Dip FET allows me to teach University, TAFE, Secondary and Primary level, and I have probably had most experience at secondary and primary schools.

I was thinking though that the FET qualification may give me some problems in HK as it is not your standard Grad Dip secondary or Grad Dip primary. Are there any NET's that do not have either of these standard Grad Dip's (or B.Ed of course) and can shed some light on the HK NET guidelines for non-standard qualifications?

You really need to speak with either;

The EMB teacher's registration section or the EMB NET scheme.

Whilst there are many Dip Ed's and Grad Dip Ed's, the problem will be the lack of teaching of observed teaching practise. According to the EMB guidlines a cert. TEFL / TESOL with at least 6 hours of OTB.

I think together the BA and Grad DipEd should be ok, but you will fall into the catagory of requiring ot obtain a recognised Cert. TEF/TESOL within one year.

You should be eligible to join the NET scheme on your BA and teaching experience alone and, as Chris suggests, will be expected to complete a TEFL during the first 2 years.

I have just sent off my application for the Pnet. I never thought I would apply but now they seemed to have dropped their criteria requirement and I have made the catergory 4 requirement so I'm giving it a try. My only concern is the experience.

I'd like to know if my two years experience in UK as a teaching assistant would actually count towards anything in the application. I have a level 2 and 3 teaching assistant certificate which probably means zilch in Hong Kong but just hope that the two years of classroom experience isn't worthless.

I have also read in other threads that teaching in Kindergarten also means nothing. Is this true? I hope not Crying or Very sad

You should qualify but they won't take your experience as a teaching assistant into consideration so you will be working on the lowest scale but you will get housing allowance so the pay should be enough - but it depends on your lifestyle!

Your situation is difficult to say whether you'll get hired or not... BUT the gov't usually looks for someone w/ experience teaching L2 experience.

Generally to be able to do the job well you should have a dip ed and a degree.

Hi Folks
a similarish query. I have a Masters in TESP .. BA degree in Psychology .. and my life has been teaching EFL - ie. no secondary / Primary teaching experience. If accepted, what Salary level / package could one expect ?
Appreciate any advice ..

hi i have the same sort of question. Of where i would fit on the pay scale. I am have a B.A in English, and Bed secondary. Just graduated currently teaching at a private school in mexico for the yr. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine has just passed the interview and written test for the PNET - she has no teaching experience and has only done an online TEFL course. I too have an interview in January for the SNET - I only have a CELTA and two and a half years' teaching experience. I don't know if it's because we are already in Hong Kong, but it doesn't seem as though the EMB are paying too much attention to their own requirements.

No, we are both entitled to that. You just have to be ordinarily resident in another country and we have only been here three months. You only don't get it if your husband's company pays for your accommodation but I'm single and my friend is living with someone but that doesn't count. I guess they are perhaps a little desperate for teachers, that or they are looking to fill positions before September (they were quite vague about that). I guess my point is that people who are worrying about whether or not their qualifications meet the requirements should just go ahead and apply because it seems as though they stand a good chance of being successful.
