Hi Folks.

I am an Australian and I have over 10 years ESL overseas experience

I have the CELTA, the DELTA and an MA in Applied Linguistics TESOL.

I have worked for the last 8 years in Hong Kong, 3 years at the British Council and 5 years at a University in Hong Kong.

My questions are:

How much would I earn teaching ESL fulltime in a university in Melbourne?

How much would I earn teaching ESL fulltime in an ELICOS school in Melbourne?

What would be the chances of me even getting a fulltime job rather than contract work with my type of experience and qualifications?

Ouch!

I liked your questions and was curious to the answers as I am in the same boat.

Obviously this does not seem to be the proper forum to seek the answers to your questions. If another forum is more successful please let me know.

Does it have to be ELICOS? Why not look at TAFE and the Adult Migrant English Service? Casual rates used to be around $40-50 an hour in Sydney. I'm not sure what full-time jobs pay or how scarce they are.

Google 'ELICOS Melbourne' and see what's available. You might be able to line something up before you get back.

The Australasia and Pacific branch on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree site might be another place to ask your question. If you're lucky a Melbourne-residing tefler might spot your post.

Hi,
I was in a similar situation to you, and I have just started a casual but (hopefully) ongoing job with an ESL school in Melbourne. Rates of pay for casual in ESL are around $35 per hour before tax, with a full day being 5 hours.
As one other poster said, rates in university and TAFE are higher, at around $50 per hour. I saw RMIT English Worldwide advertising for casual teachers at $53 per hour recently. Some of the universities and TAFEs have language schools for international students, so it may be possible to get work in this area, or in the refugee area mentioned in another post.
Permanent jobs are advertised in the papers quite often, but casual jobs are advertised just about every week.
Experience counts for a lot, and if you have any exam preparation experience, you might find work teaching IELTS preparation - schools are always looking for good IELTS teachers.
Many of the newspaper-advertised jobs are also posted online. If you haven't already looked, check out

I would think your experience and qualifications would get you onto a short list, at least. You may need to start as casual until a permanent position opens up, or until you 'prove yourself' to the school. Good luck.

Thanks so much for the information guys...really helpful.

Would still like to hear from someone working fulltime about rates of pay and conditions. Feel free to message me instead of posting publically.

Thanks!
