I just got an offer from Abu Dhabi Women's College for 11,500 DHS. I have a B.A. and DELTA, and 11 years of teaching experience.
Does anyone know if it's possible to negotiate a higher salary? Any tips on this would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

That's actually a good starting salary for someone without an MA--Delta, Celta, whatever notwithstanding. They'll be pressuring you to do a distance MA, I can guarantee you. |

Yes, that is a normal offer. It is rare that one can get the offer higher, unless you have something they really want. For example, can you teach CELTA or DELTA. Do you have a husband or wife who is coming with you to work (two for the price of one) etc. Every year you get a 6% increase, so it is actually a nice deal. |

I know of people who have negotiated higher, and also people who have tried and failed to get anything more. I think if you're at the top of the starting scale you probably can't anything more, and you're almost at the top but not quite. You could always try! As long as you're tactful, you've got nothing to lose. |

Oliviera84: If you are coming from either the UK or the Euro zone you could possibly use the current exchange rates, which are extremely high at the moment making salaries paid in Dirhams (US dollars) particularly weak against these two currencies, as something of concern to you. Maybe then you could use the "I really need that little bit extra to accept...." line. |

Thank you all!
Globalnomad2, if they pressure people to do a distance MA, do they provide any help with funding? |

of that has received any funding from HCT towards their master's degree - but then I only have 7 years in the system
I do know HCT have contributed towards content teachers' costs for obtaining a CELTA but not for anything else. |

That's great Shakhbut - it must depend on the college, or on the people you know!!
Oliviera84: I forgot to say that when you complete your MA and you submit your transcripts, you go up one point on the salary scale. |

Luckily, we haven't been put under pressure yet by our college to do a masters, though I don't know what new hires are being told.
I agree that it's too much to compel people to do one without any prospect of funding. While I was doing my masters I didn't use much of my PD funding for other things as I didn't have the time to do other courses. Yet, when I asked about funding towards my masters, I was told it wasn't the kind of PD they funded (eventhough it was directly related to my teaching)!!
It all seems to depend on the person in the college who has the authority to hand out the funding. The mind boggles... |
