My ARC will expire at the end of December. I'm staying with my current employer. However, my employer is dragging his feet in determining what is required to keep my ARC valid. Thus I ask you, oh learned online community.

Do I need another medical exam?
Will my employer have to send my passport and other documents to Taipei?
Or is it simply a matter of going to the FAP and having them change the date on my ARC?

Yes, you need another medical exam. You also need to file papers again with the labor bureau which will include another signed contract, copies of your passport, and whatever other papers they require (I can't remember exactly). It's basically the same process all over again, but everything says continuation or extension instead of a new application. When that's all finished you go to the cop shop again to get your ARC extended for another year.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

I second everything Dangerous Apple had to say...

As for getting your employer to get the process moving, good luck!
Make sure that they don't wait to long, you don't want to have overstayed...

Hi Doc,

You've helped me in the past and I'm most happy to return the courtesy. As Dangerousapple said, the documents you'll need are : two photos, a copy of the new contract, copy of your passport, a copy of your degree, the original of a recent medical test (3 months validity, and beware, they have changed the accredited hospitals. I know there's one in Shalu.), and something new; a certificate from the tax bureau proving that you have paid taxes (it's free). Not sure about what the employer needs to submit, though.

I'm also in the process of renewing with the same school. I should get my new work permit today or early next week. Then off to the FAP.

Best of lucks
Puliboy

I took the initiative and had new photos taken yesterday. They'll be ready tomorrow, so I'll be able to do the medical on Monday. If it's still in process come the expiry date I can always ask the FAP for an extension.

Employer motivation can be a tricky thing. I am not sure if it's because they truly don't understand the concept of deportation or they are just lazy. I've always found a simple, polite, respectful broaching of the concept that they should pay for a visa run should it become neccessary (providing you've provided all your paperwork within a generous time frame) usually gets them going.

I had one employer screw up the dates on a form and it cost them an all-expense paid trip to HK. I took 3 days. And was paid my salary as well. The next round of applications were as smooth as nine baby bottoms.

It just seems like the Taiwanese don't have any sense of urgency.

My laoban must have dug up some info because he enquired if I would be willing to sign a contract for three years. That way I wouldn't have to go through this again until the contract expired. LOL He was surprised when I said yes.

My situation is complicated by the fact I'm going home for three weeks, leaving the same day my ARC expires. I tried impressing upon my laoban that I'll have difficulty getting back into the country if my ARC is allowed to expire. Still, when I came to this school I only had 3 weeks left on my visitor's visa, and everything got done in time (just!).

I've heard that one can get a work permit from the CLA (Council of Labor Affairs) for 1-3 years. The problem lies with the FAP (Foreign Affairs Police), it appears they are rather reluctant to grant ARC's with more than a year of validity. You have to go back every year, but without the hassle of getting a new work permit.

Whatever is true, I'm gonna try to get 2 years. I should know by the end of next week. I'll keep you posted.

Well, I just got back from the FAP. My 2 two years work permit was received yesterday and I obtained a two years valid ARC today.

The rumours were apparently wrong. The FAP follows what's on the work permit. But then again, it was done in Nantou.

In one word : SUCCESS !!! Very Happy
