|
|
In trying to put together my packing list, I've been fretting over what I should take and what will be available once I'm in Costa Rica. I really think I'd like to pack as minimally as possible, and might even try just one carry-on and one personal bag. I've read the "What products can you not get in Costa Rica?" thread, and have been digging through every "cost of living" list I can find. This question seems to come up often, so I thought I'd share the best resource I've found: the Hipermas website, and more specifically, their advertisements. I believe Hipermas is a Wal*Mart-type store, so I know the prices and selection are a bit different from what's available in more remote locations and smaller stores, but at least it gives an idea of the types of goods that are available and updated pricing. Plus, I get to learn a bit of Spanish by seeing the product names with their pictures!
Anyone else have any tips or resources for either packing for the trip, or shopping once you get there? Any updates to the oft-asked question, "What do you wish you'd brought?" or "What could you have left behind?" What's essential for a teacher / traveler in Costa Rica? Any other store websites that show weekly advertisements? |

In the US, you deal with stress, in Costa Rica, it's frustration.
There are stores where most things can be purchased, however, one Costa Rican teaching wages, what was once affordable will seem outrageously expensive. The cost of living has increased for Ticos, but bargains can be found if searched for.
I bring all of my favorite shampoos, toiletries, and extra stuff. If you have electronic or battery operated stuff, extra bulbs, replacement parts, etc would be useful. Batteries are cheap here, at least at MegaSuper. Many other things are cheap too.
Good towels. Costa Rica produces an ok towel for a reasonable price, but if you want to indulge in a super fluffy towel(s), bring one or more with you.
I bring stuff like that, electronic stuff like a DVD player, which I will leave as a gift or sell at a bargain. |
