I never see them on Daves.. and I've done online searches through google.. but never find them. But they exist.
Is there a good website to find university job offers in Taiwan? I'm currently teaching at a university in Korea.. and have a MA in an unrelated field. |

Getting a real teaching job inside a university here in Taiwan is only really possible if you are highly qualified. You can get work with buxibans that are affiliated with universities or even run inside university grounds without needing a PhD etc., but the real jobs are going to require the full academic qualifications.
The best place for info on uni positions is probably Scott Sommers Weblog http://scottsommers.blogs.com/taiwanweblog/. There are very few positions available but Scott discusses them when they do come up.
Alternatively you could refer to www.buxiban.com and make contact with uni's directly but bear in mind that you won't get replies unless you meet their requirements as mentioned above. |

Thank you for the websites.
I teach english at a university in Korea right now. Have a MA in an unrelated field and a TESOL certificate.
I'll take a look around at those websites. Thanks again. |

What are the conditions like teaching at a University in Korea, with regard to salary, vacation time, students, materials, working hours, and ''contact hours?"
Ghost has a B.A., B.Ed. (certified teacher in Canada in English/French), M.A. (in Communication Studies), and a Post Graduate Certificate in Second Language Teaching (McGill University) the Post Grad. was equal to an M.A. in length and status, except that there was no thesis involved.
When ghost studied Mandarin/Chinese at Providence University, Shalu, near Taichung, it applied to teach English in the University Department, but was told by a Professor that without a Ph.D. in the field, there was little chance of obtaining a position.
What about in Korea, is a Ph.D. necessary to get a good Uni. job, or will an M.A. suffice?
In any case, ghost is soon to be heading out for a contract in Al Ain (United Arab Emirates, near Abu Dhabi). But once that contract is finished, will look for other opportunities.
Ghost is looking for a position with at least 3 full months off a year. Why? not out of laziness, but because it (ghost) has a co property in the Philippines which requires periodic visits each year, and also needs to travel to France at least once a year to take care of family.
Thanks for the feedback.

It really varies from university to university in Korea. But I'll just tell you mine.
I teach 12 hours a week.. and get 5 months of paid vacation a year. My university keeps class sizes below 15 (this is uncommon from what I've heard of from people teaching at other universities). Office hours are 4 hours a week.. we choose the time whenever is convenient for us.
Regarding PhDs in Korea.. of course I've met them here and there.. but its quite rare. Most are MA holders. For the most part, its not easy to get tenure at universities - my school being one of those. There seems to be a lot of debate about that on the Korean boards however. My university they will let you go after 4 years maximum and you can get rehired again the next semester. They do that to keep from having to owe you something if you've worked there for over 5 years.
Regarding your need for at least 3-months of vacation a year. Most universities in Korea have that. Mine is 5-months of paid vacation. Most average around 3-4.. and occassionally I've seen as low as 2 months.. sometimes not paid.. but I think most are - mine is anyways. That all varies too. |

As of yet, I have not seen any university in Korea hiring for an ESL Instructor/Professor where it's mandatory that the candidates have a Ph.D. Even in the USA, there are many professorship advertisements clearly showing that it's not mandatory to have a Ph.D for the position. Reality check: people get a Ph.D so they DON'T have to teach and so they can spend all their waking hours on research, publishing and maybe getting famous from a book or two. Any distinguised professor with a Ph.D will boast that they ONLY teach graduate students and they are completely devoted to research. Oh, the power of an ego! So a lot of universities who really just want the professor to focus on teaching will gladly hire the MA with teaching experience, even over a Ph.D...shhhhhh. I've seen it happen. |

Is there a link for Uni. jobs in Korea.....but sorry - NOT DAVES ESL CAFE - because every time one posts one's resume on Daves - specifying "University jobs only" - one gets dozens of replies offering jobs in Hagwons! seems like the Koreans do not even bother reading the specifics of the post which the candidate posted!....time after time the same scenario!
So what one needs is a link to a website which advertises for Uni. jobs in Korea, but not the hagwons.
Thanks for any feedback.

You could also go directly to the University sites, I think you need a PhD here to work in a University and there are not that many jobs here in Univerties, unlike Korea.
Cheers. |

Keep in mind that most Korean universities want to interview you in person, so you need to be in the country during the interviewing dates. As for the PhD part. One may be better without a PhD in Korea. If you have a PhD, I think a lot of schools would think you are over qualified. |

Furthermore sometimes people with BA's get hired at universities over people with PhDs in Korea. |

Jobs at junior colleges, 4 year colleges and universities can be found all over Taiwan. Try contacting schools in places where you think you'd like to live.
No, Taiwanese colleges and universities do not advertiseon Dave's ESL Cafe. Colleges and universities in Taiwan often advertise teaching positions (even EFL positions) on Chinese websites (try searching MoE websites).
Most of the university positions advertised on Dave's ESl Cafe are for teaching positions in Korea or China. A few in the Middle East and Europe. I think I've only ever seen 1 advertisement for a faculty position at a Taiwanese university on Dave's. And that was a long time ago. |
