I am a Belgian native who is living and working in Ireland now since 2004. After more than 2 years on the island, I feel like a new challenge. I've had a true fascination/obsession for Scandinavia since a very early age, and this may be a good time to try to realise the dream.
I would mainly be interested in going to Troms, Svalbard (or any other Northern Norwegian commune), Reykjavik, or Nuuk (Greenland).
Does anyone have any jobhunting advise?
I have been checking many jobhunting spots, such as aetat.no, job.is, monster.gl, etc but they're all in the local language and have very little vacancies where knowing the local language is not required.
I speak Dutch, English, French and German myself. I did learn a bit basic Norwegian, not good enough to have a true conversation yet, but I do feel confident that I can master the language within the 6 months once I'm there. Dito for Iceland or Greenland, I'm confident I can learn the language rather rapidly as I have always been good with languages ; I would just need a job where I can start in a different language, then to learn the local language once I'm there.
I worked in two callcenters so far (in- and outbound customer service calls, and telesales) where I worked in Dutch, English, French and German. I have also worked for one other company where I did administration and billing. I have worked in three different countries so far: Belgium, Ireland, and Northern Ireland.
Ideally an office job or even callcenter job (but probably very hard to find) would be my prefered choice, but I would not mind trying a different sort of job. Mainly hotels and tourism board services would interest me to try.
Alternatively, Venice, Croatia or Istanbul would interest me a lot to spend some time working and living there, but Scandinavia would be my ultimate dream.
Does anyone have any advise for the jobhunt? If you think you may be able to give help or advise, PM or email me and I can forward my CV written in English.
Note: when it comes to Scandinavia, I am mainly interested in the far north. But a temporary occupation in Oslo or Copenhagen would maybe be okay as well, then to move further north once I have mastered the local language. But ideally, I'd rather go directly near or above the arctic circle! |

Hi Gerrit, I know you off the football stadium forum, small world eh? Good luck with your quest to move to Scandinavia, have you tried talking to Parkerpiece? He moved to Norway as an Englishman I believe. |

Yes, try fish processing.
I'm not being funny. It's your best chance, unless you happen to be a doctor or nurse.
Look up Vard. |

Icelandic is vastly more difficult than the continental Scandinavian languages. It is essentially Old Norse minus a few features...a challenge but well worth the effort. If you learn it you can read 800 year old sagas as if they were written yesterday... |
