|
Primary NETs and Secondary NETs
I am thinking of doing a CELTA course, but the requirement of the NET scheme is a Cert/Dip of TEFL. Is CELTA equivilant to a Certificate of TEFL?
Would you recommend I do the CELTA course?
Also, do you know a good TEFL course online? |

Just to warn you that online TEFL courses are not recognised by some employers. Better to do it in-house if you can. |

The CELTA is accepted and is a great, albeit intensive, introduction to EFL teaching. Useful in Asia generally. I would recommend ECC in Bangkok. |

I have worked my way through the system. Started teaching with a BBA in Bus. Adm. in Thailand. I found my options very limited. I did do the CELTA at ECC in Bangkok, and while I found the course useless in terms of the practicality in teaching, It did open up doors for me. I ended up working with the Bell Foundation in Thailand, which offered eight weeks paid holiday, and a fairly good salary for Thai standards. I then reached the top of the ladder and went back to get a state teaching certification, and will now be moving to HK in August.
I would say that the CELTA is worth it. The cost is a lot cheeper at ECC in Bangkok, and while ECC Bangkok has a shaby reputation, the course itself must meet rigourous Accreditation standards from the Cambridge Exam Board in order for them to continue to offer it. |

EMB accepted my CELTA as equivalent...that is to write: somebody at EMB told me so...we may find that this is not the case in the future! because: CELTA is Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults.
good luck! |

I realise that. As I said in my last reply, its a rip off. I got nothing from the CELTA, however, for whatever reason, it did open doors for me. I would only recommend it because in many countries in SE Asia you cannot get better ESL jobs without it.

I do not feel that a CELTA course is a ripoff, nor did I allude to that in my post. My point is, and was: the CELTA is geared towards teaching adults, and so it might not be accepted by EMB in the future for PNET or SNET programmes.
(sigh)

I do not know what EMB or PNET or SNET stand for. I have never been to HK so I do not know what these acronyms mean. |

The penny drops!
I refuse to believe that 'lanceevan1' is a genuine poster. It is a time-waster feigning navety. |

I did the CELTA at ECC in Bangkok and I thought it was an extremely useful and valuable course. It is not a rip off. The trainers were very knowledgable and qualified. I would rather have someone teaching for me who had a CELTA than someone who had something academic with no practical experience. They can always do a Post Graduate course later to get a bit of linguistics as background knowledge. Of course, what would I know I only have a Masters in TESOL, a DipEd, a CELTA, part of a Doctorate in Education ..... |

And "11:59" would be what, exactly? Discuss. |
