A couple of days ago I read (and replied) to Melly`s excellent update on the Panama story in the job journal. In my reply (yet to be printed--if ever), I agreed with Melly on all counts, but I took issue with the number of EFL teachers available in this country. Melly said "three" and I said "three thousand." We`re both right.
While Melly took into consideration native English speakers, I took into account the number of non-native English speakers as well as Americans and Canadians. Melly is correct in her statement when she says that the number of native English speakers are few in number here.
Although it may seem unfair in some cases, the native English speaker has the upper hand. While many of the native English speakers get the better paying jobs, many of the numerous non-native English speakers are relegated to low wage language schools or work in some deplorable private schools that need to be padlocked by the Ministry of Education.
I agree with Melly that opportunities abound here. The competition is stiff and much of what is offered depends on the reputation one has gained over a period of time. Good $$$ can be made. But a first timer can always get lucky. Overall, it`s worth a shot. |
