|

Hello folks,
I was wondering if anyone out there knows how to display Japanese characters in a yahoo email message (it's a Western OS, Western yahoo, Windows XP, Japanese font packs installed, regional settings set to include Japanese). I can read documents in Japanese, and I can view webpages in Japanese... I just can't read any yahoo emails in Japanese.
Thnx! |

I had the same problem and wound up getting a gmail account, which displays Japanese properly. It's not your computer, it's yahoo's english site which does not work with Japanese.... GRRRRRRR.....
Beats me why since they have such a large Japanese presence as to why the english language web email does not do Japanese. |

Yeah, it's amazing that they can't do it.. especially since they have a Japanese portal with Yahoo Japan. Maybe I'll make the switch to gmail.
I have another tech problem for the tech wizzes out there. I have an English OS but my keyboard is Japanese. I'd like to be able to toggle between English typing and Japanese typing. How do I set that up? From what I've found on the net, I need IME... I downloaded it. But beyond that, I'm stumped. Any advice??
...I think I'll start a new thread cuz I'm guessing the yahoo-specific nature of this one is causing people to skip it. |

Yahoo outside of Japan (i.e. yahoo.ca, yahoo.com, yahoo.co.uk, etc) can most certainly display most Japanese characters... It's just that it can't do it natively and you may have to jump through a couple of hoops in order to do so.
A lot of it depends on how the original Japanese message was written. But once your message is on the screen, just go to [V]iew and Encoding (in Internet Explorer). Firefox users: it will be something very similar but I don't have Firefox on as I'm writing this. Then, MANUALLY change the encoding setting from WHATEVER it may be (even if it's set to auto-detect) to one of the Japanese encoding modes. Try them all... If one doesn't work, try the other, etc... Eventually you SHOULD be able to get the Japanese characters to come up.
I remember running into this a couple years ago when I held an e-mail contest at the Jr. High where I taught. I handed out point cards to all my students, and for each complete English sentence they e-mailed me, I gave them a stamp on their card. When they filled up their whoile card (20 stamps) they could enter to win a prize at the end of the semester (which was usually a new DVD movie). I had ALL SORTS of weird e-mails coming in.... And even though they wrote in English, they were using different manners of English-input schemes, so Yahoo displayed everything as gobbletygook. After I changed the Encoding view method, presto! Everything magically changed to what it SHOULD have looked like.
Hope that helps. If not, PM me and provide specific details and I'll try my best to help. There are others little tricks you can try, but they are a bit complicated and go beyond the scope of a simple forum thread reply.
P.S. Don't forget to change your encoding mode back to auto-detect or English when you're done. |

I tried each of the Encoding options for Japanese, but none of them worked. I also changed the font setting under "internet options" so it could support a Japanese font... unfortunately that also didn't work.
A recent email that I received said, at the top, in English When you cannot read Japanese, please set the character code
to ISO-2022-JP. but I wasn't able to figure out how to do this. Eventually I gave up, assuming that it was just a request to change the encoding (which I already did).
Am I missing something? (This is a different computer than the one mentioned in the other thread... I've got an English OS, Windows XP, Japanese languages installed, I don't think I have IME or a Japanese keyboard set up) |

I have a Japanese computer, Japanese OS, and I can't see Japanese characters on my Yahoo email either- they usually end up looking something like :$$PR@%6##1!" if I'm sent anything in Japanese.
I haven't found the solution, so I have a Japanese Yahoo account as well, and I give that address to anyone likely to send me mail containing Japanese. It just means I have to check two email accounts, which I don't find too much of a hassle. |

if you want to toggle between english and japanese (or any other language when typing) just go to start > control panel > regional and language options > languages > details > add > select japanese for both > click language bar (under preferences) > check what you want > apply
(i also ticked 'install files for east asian languages too)
hope that helps |

The new Yahoo Mail Beta can display messages in Japanese, I think. |

I use a Japanese OS and keyboard, my regional/language settings are Japan/Japanese, and I still can't see Japanese characters on Yahoo mail! Seems to be some glitch in the program....
I ended up having to do what Apsara suggests (i.e., going with YahooJapan). |

Jim, like Chris, I tried this as well. There was no setting I could find to make it work. Shift JIS, ISO-2022-JP, 16-bit Unicode, 8-bit Unicode, JEUC, etc. all produced different versions of this: '$&'#'(%(&%$&#
With YahooJapan, I read Japanese and English with no problems. |

Let me look into this further.... In the mean time, if you like, whoever is reading this -- you may send me a test message in Japanese a this address:
[email protected] I will run some tests and get back to you. I KNOW it can be done -- it's just a matter of figuring out the trick.

From Yahoo itself:

Does Yahoo! Mail support my character set?
Although we are continuously working on improvements to our service, Yahoo! Mail does not currently support non-Roman characters such as Chinese and Japanese. As a result, any messages that include these characters may appear unreadable.
If possible, have the sender re-send the message using a US-ASCII character set. |

I can read messages in Japanese on Yahoo, but I have to edit the "Reply To" address when I reply, because if I leave the Japanese name there, it gives me an error message. Very irritating. |
