Hi, I currently teach in Korea and will be doing a visa run to Fukuoka soon. I was hoping to pick up an old Roland MC-505. Does anyone know of some used electronic instrument stores I could check out while I am there?

Thanks in advance.

Any particular reason why it must specifically be a Roland MC-505?

I've already got one back home (and wouldn't mind having a pair). I also know my way around the OS and like the Megamix function, many believe it was the basis of Ableton Live.

There was a law brought in mid-year that made the sale of second-hand electrical equipment very difficult I don't know what the impact has been but musicians especially were up in arms because there is such a huge market in old hi-fi and synthesizers(sp?) which would have been wiped out by the new law.

Anyone noticed any changes.

Yeah, that's halfway correct... It's called the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law. The law that was passed prohibts the sale of anything (everything from TVs to guitar amps) manufactured prior to 2001 that has NOT passed through a certain safety testing standard... The old testing standard, is gone and replaced with the new

If you want a comprehensive list of all the items that are affected by this law, go here: http://homepage3.nifty.com/tsato/terms/denan-e.html

No, not really. In the Spring of this year, there was a massive sell-off at recycle shops around the country of goods that weren't up to the new standard, before the new law kicked in... But you can still buy pretty much anything you need new or used, providing that it abides by the new law. I've purchased all sorts of used electronics since Spring of this year, so it's not so bad.

As for this particular model of Roland..... I have no idea whether or not it's something you can readily get. If it's a current (not discontinued) model, then Roland would have adapted it for sale under the new standard. If not, you may be hard up trying to find one.

Thanks Jim it was a while ago and I couldn't recall all the details I think that the musos were worried that some of the more exotic equipment, like vacuum bulb amps, couldn't pass the new standard. Plus all that pre2001 stock had to be tested, which cost money, so alot of places just dumped it.

Yeah... damn, the 505 is definitely pre-2001.
