MartinK,
there has been a pile of threads on this topic, and you have missed them, apparently!
Your FAO is correct. You should have presented him with a RELEASE LETTER from your former employer, with his stamp as well as a stamp from that locality's PSB.
A release letter is like a clean police report: they confirm that there is no complaint against you although it does not say so in it.
A release letter is a paper that confirms that you and your employer have ended a relationship peacefully, so the police have no objection to you finding a new job elsewhere in this country.

The visa run to HK is not a kosher alternative. You will end up having to pay for your own visa, and it is not going to be a work visa. If your employer consents to this solution, I can only say: Inshallah!

Not useless - just incomplete.

Is your new school trying to get rid of you? This is a minor technicality that most schools can fix without any major problem unless it is to their advantage to do otherwise.

What???? This is not covered in the comprehensive "Book of Sunaru"?

Rewrite - Rewrite - Rewrite!!!!!!!

We have a press deadline so let's shake tail here folks and get this rewrite finished in time for publication!!!!

We must not over look anything. The people must remain convinced that the Magnificant Manager knows all, sees all, tells all. Just ask Johhny Carson.

MartinK,
a release letter should be stamped by the PSB; go back there and ask them to add their red-ink decoration to your letter! Costs hardly anything, although you must go there in person.

Sunaru,
too many imponderables in your query! Why do you have to get a new visa? How are you going to obtain it, and where?
If you continue with the same employer, you will probably get your work visa with no further hassles. But if you change your employer, the old one is supposed to give you a clean bill of character health.

MartinK,
in my experience, the PSB have considerable leeway in how to handle requests from the foreign public. In my opinion, you stand a reasonably good chance of obtaining a one-time, 30 day extension if your application is being made by your employer under the understanding that they will seek a new work visa.
If it is a mere tourist visa that you want, you will have to check in some hotel and be a registered tourist (your registration slip automatically finds its way to the local PSB!), then you can apply for an extension.
In some places, they grant you an extension only for the purpose of travelling out of the country! In those cases, they want to see outbound tickets, or be satisfied that you would cross the border within a reasonable period of time.

I would involve my FAO in your case!
