Hey folks: a friend is contemplating doing her teaching certification in Special Ed, and would like to work in the Middle East. In N.America, the need for Special Ed teachers is high, but I wonder how she'll fair in the Middle East? My own experience tells me that lots of private schools are not looking for special ed teachers. Thoughts?

Heaven knows that there is certainly a great need for special education teachers in the ME, but my first thought on the matter is that it would need to be done by an Arabic speaker.

Or for a very experienced person who could go over and work in the education departments to train the local teachers.

Well, it just so happens this friend is Egyptian born and raised in the UK with a significant amount of teaching experience in Egypt. She's trying to choose which area she'd like to study (ESL, Special Ed, etc.) and looks towards the UAE as a future employment opportunity. I just didn't know many people in the UAE who were (are) Special Ed teachers, though I will acknowledge there is a huge need for it. Another friend has her autistic boy in the UAE, but struggles to find affordable educational options.

Perfect... I would tell her to go for it. But to also have a double major... two things that she can teach. Primary Education cert and Special Ed would give her many options.
