Is there a norm for what is required to be hired as a teacher in an African country? For example, do they usually offer a written contract? Do they usually check references? What should I be expecting? I did an interview with a new school in Addis Ababa, and was curious because no mention was made of contracts or references. Or is this just my western upbringing jumping out and yelling "this is different!"

Thanks!

Surely you really need something to make sure you will actually get paid, Tree. You don't want to get stuck up a creek. Maybe someone else will suggest how that might happen in Ethiopia - I have no experience. Surely in a city they must be at least used to people asking for some guarantee. Maybe consider telling them you really need a guarantee that you will be paid, and on time, otherwise you will be in dire straits, and see what they say?
