I was wondering if those Dave's readers in or around the Shenzhen area could help me with a question regarding the current rates of remuneration.

I am looking for an average starting wage for the area, assuming minimum qualifications - Degree, perhaps a TESOL cert, little or no actual experience in an ESL lassroom.

This would be at a school, not a training centre or "McJob" as its so aptly put.

I am interested not only in the salary but the "total figure" including accom, office hours/class hours, "flight bonus", and the like.

Although, I have worked/lived in the area for some time, when i was recently asked by some acquaintance abroad, I have found I am out of touch with the current "starter" deal.

Thanks,

In response to your question, I would say that the average would be more of a range:

9,000-11,000 base salary per month; 2,000 for housing allowance if housing is not provided; year-end bonus/airfare about 6,000.

hours most likely 18-24 classroom hours, and more and more places are giving "non-teaching" hours to this...you must be at school for 40 hours per week. This means you're putting in a 40 hour work week, but only having to "teach" about half of those hours. There are still a few places without this requirement, but they're becoming scarce.

of course, just like anywhere, you will find places that pay less and places that pay more. Some places will pay for all your expenses (medical, visa, etc) and others make you pay these items yourself. Some places make you pay taxes on your income, others don't. I'd tell your friends to investigate all offers fully and weigh pros and cons carefully. Research goes a long way in making a good decision.

Hope this was helpful.
