A useless poll that The Rolling Stone hasn't thought of yet! That's a shocker! I was just glancing at the Thanksgiving thread and found myself curious about the current make up of this board.

Not trying to be pedantic... But doesn't having Japanese parents make you a FIRST generation American? Smile

That's a really good point Jim, and I was waiting for someone to bring it up to me.

I'm a bit confused on this one. Based on the dictionary definition you provided, you're right, I am technically a "first generation."

However, all my life, I have been told by my parents, relatives, and friends that I am a "2nd generation."

Also, every year in Los Angeles, the city holds its annual "Nissei week" festival. I am almost positive all the girls who compete in it are from immigrant parents.

I'm not sure what's really correct or not, but I've been told and have been telling others I am a 2nd generation (Nissei) all my life.

Yeah, the way TK4Lakers counts it is the way it`s done in California.
Everyone I know who was born to parents who immigrated to the States, refers to themselves as 2nd generation Japanese, Korean, Ethiopian, Upper Voltan, etc.

We always refer to the immigrants themselves as 1st generation. Nissei Week was originally held, in the early 20th century, for the children of the Japanese immigrants to help them maintain their Japanese roots and to keep ties between Japanese-Americans strong in LA.

Yeah, that's interesting. I never knew that in some places they count it differently. Based on the definition I found, I'm assuming that immigrant parents (unless you're from California) would be the 0-generation.
