Tijuana-PV, is there a bus?
It seems there is no cheap flight from TJ-Puerto Vallarta, so I'm wondering if long distance bus is the way to do it. How long is the trip? And is it scenic?
I've heard the only buses worth booking in Mexico are first or business class buses.
How much would a single fare cost from Tj-PV (if travelling in the day, and if the road isn't scenic, overnight)? |

One of the beautiful things about Mexico is that the inter-city bus service is terrific. You will have no trouble getting from TJ to PV. You can go total first class (use ETN for that) to 1st class down to 2nd (which I dont recommend as you dont save that much money and lord knows you'll need a bathroom for that long a trip)
Youll be going down the coast mostly on Hwy 15 Ill bet after you very likely go through Hermosillo. Not all of it will be scenic but some will be (Ive gone from Mexico City all the way up to Nogales a couple of times - yes I know Im nuts) but it will be an adventure (a safe adventure, much safer than in the States IMHO)
If youre in no hurry, plan a couple of pit stops. You can do this without doubling your bus fare. And unless youre travelling the weekend before Xmas, you really dont need to worry about making a reservation. In fact, sometimes you cant buy your ticket more than a couple of days in advance.
Last tip, bring sandwiches. Terminal food tends to be crappy and expensive. Sometimes you are lucky and the terminal opens to the street where there are vendors but more often this is not the case. |

The only bus to take from Tijuana in my opinion is ABC.Nice clean comfortable buses.I assume you are crossing from the US to Tijuana. If you go on foot you will save a few dollars by crossing at Otay Mesa.As you walk across on the Mexico side during daylight hours you will find a group of yellow cabs waiting to take you to the station.Should run you about 5-7 dollars.Tell them you want to go to Central Camionera. If they don't know where it is take another taxi as every Tijuanan knows the place well.If crossing at San Ysidro suits you better then after you walk across keep to your right.Do not walk to yellow taxi stand.Make a right and go through the metal gates on to Amistad street where the farmacias are. From there make a left and follow the rest of the Mexicans walking toward the stand for taxi libre. |

Gold Rush -- If you are of the female persuasion and are travelling alone, I suggest you make a reservation if you can. Tell the clerk that since you are alone, you would like to be seated next to another woman or a child. (Otherwise, you may end up receiving unwelcome pawing in the wee hours from some over-friendly guy.) The clerks are usually understanding, and even approving of these requests and do their best to accommodate you.
Actually, even though you might like the extra space, it's better to have a non-threatening-type seatmate than to have a double seat to yourself. If the seat next to you is free, once again, you will be date-bait.
But yes, by all means, take that bus trip!! |
