I read on one of the previous posts (pertaining to non-residency status) that for Canadian taxes a credit card is considered a tie to the country. I talked to someone at ICBC about getting a card through them and they said all foreigners require a local guarator (sp?). Does anyone know of a different bank in Taiwan, specifically Tainan that offers credit cards to foreigners without one? If so, what are the requirements for the card ie. monthly income etc.? Thanks in advance. Very Happy

Unfortunately a foreigner probably has more chance of drawing blood from a stone than getting a credit card in Taiwan. They are even reluctant to issue them to foreigners who have been resident in Taiwan for many years. The only real chance of getting a credit card (without jumping through hoops) in Taiwan is through American Express.

Keep your credit card from your home country if at all possible. Also keep a bank account in your home country. (I know you are concerned about tax, but you can find other ways around that problem). Use internet banking to transfer funds from your account in your home country to your credit card. You can use your bank account to receive money that you send home from Taiwan (which is very easy to do).

Yes, foreign residents can in fact obtain credit cards from banks in Taiwan. Try HSBC, Chunghwa or China Trust.

Foreign residents can even secure mortgages from banks in Taiwan.

Hi Angelina,

If your credit card from Canada is your only tie to the country, you can still be recognise as a non-resident. I have a credit card and a bank account, both based in Canada, and I am a non-resident since Jan 1st, 2005. I wire money to my bank account and make payments to my Visa through their web site.

PM me for more details...

I got a bank account at Taipei Fubon
Bank and got a credit card (2). It was a
snap. They gave me an ATM card which
also doubles as a debit card. In addition
to that, they gave me a Visa and a
Mastercard.
