|
|
Greetings!
My boyfriend and I are very interested in teaching English this summer (2007) at a camp in Asia. Does anybody have ANY contacts for this sort of thing? I can't seem to find any info about this as of yet...
Look forward to hearing from somebody soon... |

Did you do a search on this board (all forums)?
You probably won't be able to get a work visa for that short a time, which means working illegally.
You probably won't get housing or airfare paid for, which means you probably won't even break even on setup costs.
Do you have a bachelor's degree (necessary for a work visa in most countries)? |

Thanks for answering back so quickly,
I am in my second year of a 4 year bachelors degree. I was told by the director of the EFL school I graduated from that there are positions available in Asia for university students to teach for the summer. I tried running a search as you suggested on the 'Newbie' board under "summer camps" and I didn't get anything helpful. However, I read a posting from a women claiming her son was able to teach overseas under the title of 'counselor' which allowed him to get away with not having a visa. I realize that this may be 'illegal', but, have you heard of options such as this for university students?
Please respond... |

Do the search on the general forum and any country forum you may feel is appropriate, not just on the newbie forum.
I have "heard", too, that some universities offer a special summer program for non-grads to "work" in Japan. I would expect that you have to be enrolled in such a university to be eligible, so if you should check your school.
Otherwise, you are ineligible for a work visa in Japan, and most summer camp jobs here require a valid visa. The ones I have seen advertised usually pick people from within Japan. |

Unfortunately, South Korea won't post jobs until a couple months before. Doesn't look like you will teach there anyway, but I suspect this is common with most countries. |

Glenski, why do you post complete non-sense. You can get visas to teach a summer camp in South Korea and for China. The OP cannot since he or she does not have a BA.
The OP might find a job in China but the flight would probably be $1200 US +. The average summer camp salary in China would be between $500-$800. They would not break even. If one has a BA then can come out ahead in South Korea. The camp that I am working at pays $3300 for 5 weeks and you can stay 7 weeks and earn $4700. Even if you spent $1500 for a flight you would have $3000 left. |

The American school in Tokyo hires university students to work at their summer camp but you have to find your own housing. Not this is a summer camp and not an English camp. I don't think English is taught at all.

Summer camps in China are common, but are generally aimed at teachers already in-country. Few, if any, will offer airfare, though all will provide a room, meals and salary. Some people enjoy this work, whilst others do it because they have to.
I would sooner drink from a baboon's bladder.
Watch the main job boards closer to mid year; its too early now. |

The Global TEFL camp in Hangzhou would probably hire you. They hire a 100 teachers each summer. Of course the pay is 5000-6000 RMB and no airfare. |

Would you stop criticizing what I post without reading what I write?
I was not referring to any other country except Japan, and I wrote "probably". Your single, one, individual example is the only exception I have heard in 9 years. |

Glenski, nothing in your first reply to the OP about Japan. This post says nothing about Japan. The OP ask about Asia and you seem to say that in all of Asia they will not offer you a visa for short term work. You can get a visa in China and Korea for short term work. In Taiwan I only know of one camp and it is all under the table. They expect you to work on a tourist visa.

Please actually know what you have written before critizing me. Your post about people not being able ot get a visa for short term work said nothing about Japan. Are posters supposed to guess that you are only refering to Japan when they don't know anything about you?

Does anyone see where Glenski is refering to only Japan in his first post? Not to mention that almost every camp in China and Korea give you a dorm room or a hotel room. |

Pardon me for not pointing out the fact that I live in Japan (although my handle DOES say Japan) and have rarely if ever made any statements about other Asian countries and job requirements therein. |

JZer is correct though Glenski. You're posting on the Newbie board. The enquiry was about Asia. You didn't specify Japan in your answer.
Your bad. Fess up and move on. |

I apologized. Deal with it.
My second post pointed out Japan. Deal with it.
I pointed out that even for newbies, a look into specific country forums is also a wise move. |
