Hello all. I'll be flying out of the U.S. for China in late January, just two months from now and am beginning to wonder if I have everything taken care of or if there is something that I may be forgetting about. I'll have my B.A. in December, I've got my TEFL certification, I have my Chinese Visa, I've got my flight booked, and I also have a job lined up. On top of those main points I also have copies of all my documents and my resume. Other then clothing, etc... is there anything that I may be missing that would be necessary? I ask this because I only realized 3 months ago that I was supposed to get a Chinese Visa before I leave the U.S.... so if anyone can think of anything it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure you can access bank accounts, credit cards, etc., online.

Have enough money in reserve and with easy access for an escape if needed.
Otherwise, I'd suggest posting in the China forum. |

Travel health insurance for the time between you leave the US and when your employer provides you with Chinese health insurance (assuming that's included in your contract) or else travel health insurance for the duration of your time abroad. |

Make sure you google the name of the school before you sign the dotted line, look for the top 50 links on google and if everything is kosher than maybe no one has had a horor story to relate...yet.
Ditto bringing along the jump drive and getting a gmail account to keep in touch with your peeps back home.
I know this may sound stupid, but bring along a World Almanac and Book of Facts. It comes in handy when needing to find info that seems so easy to get at home without even bothering to get on the internet. I go to mine about as often as I go to Google to get a fact.
And at least it is reading material for long bus and train rides. |

I'm from Iowa. And I import it wherever I go. Travel makes you weird.
Best,
