Find a bar called Rue de Foche. It's on ulica Fosza, or Focha. Not sure. That's where the native speakers hang out. I think they still go on Thursdays and/or Saturdays. Send me your e-mail and I'll pass it on to my good buddy who still lives here.
You're arriving in Poland in winter. Just remember this: it gets better. Be sure to drink plenty of piwo and wino, both grzane (mulled beer and wine...yummm).
Don't venture out of the city center, it's not worth it. Unless you're going far out, like to Olsztyn castle. There are plenty of castles between Czestochowa and Krakow.
Oh, one last thing! Consonni ice cream! It's the best!!!!!!!!!! |

Some additional "advice":
Jasna Gra (Cathedral in the middle of Czestahowa) is a pretty amazing place, I thought--even if you're not a practising Catholic. They have the highest church steeple in Poland: which you can climb for fantastic views(of the dull, grey surrounding landscape:))
Afowles forgot to tell you about the possible necessity of side trips to nearby larger cities--such as Krakow (only about 2 hrs away by train/bus), and the underrated Poznan:))--about 3 hrs...I lived in a similar-sized city--Kalisz, which was great for getting a feel for the authentic Polish culture, but not so good from a cosmopolitan perspective.
Powodzenia! (Good luck!) |

2hours to Krakow on train? hahaha try 5 hours sometimes on those slow stop-at-every-bloody-stop trains
You'll have to hit up Depo, its a charming little dance club by the train station! I also recommend... the Pool hall on Aleja Tudeusza K road, just off the main drag. Porter?? I think its called. They have a kick ass Karaoke night on Thursdays and the poles will dig your western style trust me ;o)
As for food, theres a lot of nice lil Baci Maliny Food places tucked away. On the main strip (West side) about 200m? up from Jasna Gora, there is a lil pub with an old Lady who makes a Mean cup of Borst and plate of pierogies!
Pizza place on the main strip... is really good to. and Babylon? I forget now its an egyptian theme place with pretty good shawarmas for about 15zloty.
There is even a movie theater on the main strip too.
Jasna Gora? Its nice, good to walk up to if you are bored. For the true Polish style pilgrimage, you should really crawl around the bit by the Black madona. A bit uncomfortable on the knees, but God will know you love him!
I miss Czestochowa... Home to some of the nicest girls in Poland.... |
