Hey everyone, I am a looking to travel to Thailand in April, May or June of 2007 to try and teach english for a year. I have a College degree as well as a 40 hour TEFL. I would like to find a cool beach town to teach at, does anyone have any reccomendations? I have heard that Phuket is rather hard to find work in. Also how hard is it to find work in thailand after you have arrived? Is it worth paying a company like "I to I" or Linguatec $600-800 for job placement? If anyone could give me any reccomendations or advice it would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much! |

This is what a lot of people come here looking for. Unfortunately there aren't many TEFL jobs in beach towns. Phuket, for example, has serveral schools and EFL cert. training facilities. Positions are few and lots of competition, as you would imagine.
I don't think you need to pay $600 to a company to find you a TEFL job in in Thailand - or anywhere in Asia, for that matter. There are a lot of jobs here.
Come over first and have a look around. Also, I'm not a big believer in using recruiters, particularly those who ask for your money up front before finding you a job! |

eekstr17 I would like to do the same but have you ever been there in the summer time?
I was there during the month of Feb and I can remeber one day at 4o C.
For this reason, I'm considering postponing the trip to September.
Miyazaki: As with eekstr17 I'm aiming for a Beach town. Pattaya, Phuket, phiphi...
So your understanding is that these "Beach Towns" are harder to find work due to a higher level of competition?
Thanks

Yes. Wanting to "teach on the beach" is a popular idea. Add to that the idea of wanting to "study on the beach" for a TEFL or CELTA certification and you have lots of people chasing the jobs in beach areas.
That said, there are jobs in these communities - and even some good jobs. Experienced teachers who can show a work habit of staying somewhere a couple years will have a definite advantage as most employers are quite tired of the people who want to teach for three months and move on.
Wages though, are less than in Bangkok, even though the cost of living may be higher. |
