Does anyone have any information about Prince Mohammed University? I know this is their first year in operation. Is anyone working there or do you know anyone who works there? How is the working environment? How are the students?
Thank you for any information.

One of our regular posters, VS, I think, always advises posters to steer clear of colleges in their start-up phase. Growing pains, or, as Condi Rice might say, "birth pangs". |

I wish that I had a dollar for every time I have said that over the years.
Truly, Laila... unless you are one of those people who enjoy the chaos of educational startup operations, I would suggest waiting until the 3rd or 4th year.

It's not that you don't wish them well, but any business suffers in the first few years. An educational system starting up in country without a comparable system, is well, difficult, right? That is not to say it can't or won't improve, actually some would say it can only get better, but the ramp-up nonsense may appear to the employees as some kind of ritual torture tactics. So, move on to PMU if you must, oh Laila, but don't expect Majnoon to save the day anytime soon! The oracles of the sandbox tell me you may expect to go a little majnoon along the way... |

Actually it is often the second year that is the worst. In the first year they tend to stick to the noble ideals that inspired them; in the second year 'realism' kicks in, and the place goes downhill rapidly. |

Everyone of the previous posts are dead on right - it is a disaster. With no leadership, no direction, apathy, and incompetence everywhere, the startup was an absolute farce. It will take years to get where they should and by that time they may have already ruined their reputation irreparably.
Now the good news. If you still want to come to PMU, and you better believe they are "coke addict desperate" for teachers, then you can bargain with TIEC for a very, very good salary. Everyone at PMU came in with different salaries, depending on your bargaining prowess. Some are paid more , some or paid less but the average is about 12,000 SAR. Don't accept that! Ask for the world - you just might get it! That's how desperate they are. |

Well done redgoo, that's the best advice/info I've seen on this forum. Ask for SR20,000 laila. |

Thank you all for your advice and information. I worked at a college in Jeddah a few years ago and for the first few years the college ran quite smoothly. It was when the new administration took over that things started going downhill. However, it never got as bad as some of the places I have heard about. |

Take the advice and ask for "coke addict desperate for teachers" wages. After all, most teachers are crack addict desperate for high wages, so try it and see what happens. Be sure to let us know. Hopefully it wont lead you to valium to balance things out...
BTW, is that your excuse Van? |

WOW! Who are you? Are you still there, at PMU? I am a teacher who had to bail at the last minute -- big family crisis and my sister in revolt. I
But I thought of going back. It's good money, but I actually thought that Al-Khobar was "freer." What do you do on weekends.? Are there any movie clubs? Theatricals? Anything?
PLEASE advise in your lucid way. Thanks. |

maryfrances, good inside info like that in redgoo's post is rare here. Don't go getting your hopes up.
As for weekend's in Khobar, allow me to quote from a song:
You wouldn't like it here / There aint no entertainment / And the judgements are severe
You've got to want the cash badly to come here. |

I do like
Al-Khobar, but there is nothing of what you suggest. Put it this way. I am six kilometers away, it is the weekend, and I am at home posting on Dave's. |
