What's your belief/scope on them?

I have heard all sorts of stories about them being organised by the mafia. They are purposely injured, sometimes with limbs cut off, etc.

The reason I ask is because in the past couple of days(coinciding with the cold weather) I've seen an increase of beggars(usually teenage boys wearing very little clothes and no shoes) shivering on the street in Kurtulus, Besiktas, Levent Carsi and Taksim..

What do they do the rest of the year?

I don't mean this to be a nasty post just genuine curiousity.

There seems to be an increased incidence of beggars in Izmir too, though not the unsuitably dressed kids. I've seen a lot of middle-aged/elderly (sometimes difficult to tell) men sleeping on the streets with, perhaps, a single thin blanket. As it's been so cold of late I believe their lives were at risk and I can only imagine that someone would do this if they had no choice in the matter. I'm ashamed to say, I have done nothing to relieve their situation - that old excuse, "If I give him some money for a place to stay he'll only squander it on meths etc".

I'd put the increase down to the proximity of Bayram and the increased awareness of the requirement to be charitable. I'm not a good Moslem, nor even a good Christian!
