A private college in Shandong Province has refused to give their teachers airline tickets from the 2005-2006 academic year yet they are in their second year contract. Where can the teachers find the written policy in English which states schools are required to be give Foreign Experts RT air tickets for one year contracts and one way for a six month contract? The State Administration of Foreign Experts in Beijing and the Shandong Foreign Affairs office in Jinan should have these reqirements but no one is helping the teachers find this info in English. Thanks a bunch.

According to Clark G..this is a misunderstanding of the Foreign teachers and they should apply to their kitchen staff for arbitration...contact him for the procedures...he's the Martha Stewart of ESL mediation..

I have never seen this in any policy about foreign workers...
if it is in the contract and the teachers are on an RP..then you may be able to file a complaint with the local Department of Labor...but this is time consuming and not binding....
It is important to negotiate money in contracts and not benefits...the Chinese often will short you on the bennies... |

I was told by my school in Wuhan its a requirement from the PSB to pay a RT for 12 month and one-way for 6 month contracts.
I know this because I am breaking my 12 month contract at the end of Jan and only now doing the 6 and they said they will still pay half my RT (ie one-way) because of the above. I asked because I need my fare to get out of here! Perhaps I am lucky?
Before you ask why am I breaking it? I got myself pregnant and the baby is due before the end of the contract and 'sold it' to the school they can recruit a new teacher for 6 months rather than 2!!!! |

If it's stated in your contract that the school will buy or reimburse a ticket (whether it be one-way or RT), then that is what is due to the teacher. If it's not in the contract, then . . .. ???? |

If you are employed in a SAFEA registered school as a 'foreign expert' then the SAFEA regulations in this respect should apply to your case.
You can download a PDF which answers this very question from this page. It's number 611 'Other Compensation for Foreign Experts'. The document is dated 2002 but to my knowledge it still applies.
If you are not working as a foreign expert in a SAFEA registered school then as Kev points out hopefully your contract covers the payment of the airfare so you can refer to that. |

I think you missed a "c". Should it read "Martha Stewart of ESL medication."? |
