I am looking to supplement my salary from teaching in a highschool with a one night a week teaching job somewhere in central Tokyo.

I am a qualified (history) teacher and have worked in a Japanese govt. office for 3 years. My Japanese is OK but still pretty basic.

If anyone can recommend agencies / schools that pay a reasonable rate that are good to deal with that might be looking for someone I would really appreciate it.

With thanks

You can set your own rate and teach private lessons. Use something like

www.findateacher.net
www.nativeconnection.net
http://homepage1.nifty.com/y-dream-support/englishteacher/

to register your name and have students call you.

Thanks Glenski.
At the moment I think I would rather teach classes than do private tutoring -for a couple of reasons. First up I am trying to broaden my experience. Also I don't want to have to meet in coffee shops which can be crowded, noisy and smoky - my house is a fair way from the station. Thirdly, I think if I teach a class I can probably earn more. And last but not least - I actually am a bit apprehensive of private tutoring of male students.... I'm not a prude really.... it's just I'd feel more comfortable.
(I suspect my husband would too)
The Gogirls site is quite good for female teachers who want a matching with female teachers.

Points well taken.

Just FYI,
I think you could actually make more with private lessons than with a class. In my experience, schools offer a mere 3000-5000 yen per class, rarely more than once a week.

There are the negatives associated with privates, as you have mentioned, plus the instability.

Good luck.
